Receiving the HabitSister Sifundo Mabaso
Saturday, 7 March – Saturday dawned with glory and sunshine at St Mary’s Convent, Blaauwbosch. The day of celebration began with the joyful reception of Sifundo Mabaso into the Novitiate.
In a simple ceremony in the presence of the Sisters and a few members of her family who presented her to the Congregation, Sifundo was clothed in the Dominican Habit: the tunic, the scapular (which hangs over one’s shoulders and is a sign of contemplation in our tradition) and a white veil, together with a Rosary. Sister Felicity Cunningham OP, Congregation Prioress, received Sifundo into the Novitiate.
At this moving ceremony, a young woman is asked What do you seek? She replies, God’s mercy and yours. This question will be put to her again in years to come: at First Profession and again at Final Profession. Always we seek and give mercy freely.
Sifundo became ‘Sister Sifundo’ and received also the Breviary (prayer book) from which she will recite and sing the Divine Office with the Community.
At the end of the ceremony, the Novitiate Register was signed and Sister Sifundo was passed into the care of her Novice Mistress, Sister Ann Cunningham OP.
As a sign of welcome, all the Sisters and those present exchanged a Sign of Peace amid singing and joyful celebration.
May God who has begun this good work in you, Sifundo, Himself bring it to fulfilment.
Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine, pray for us. Mother Rose Niland, pray for us.
