Associates Programme

 “The Order of Preachers was founded for preaching and the salvation of souls.”

Primitive Constitutions, Order of Preachers

The decision to invite lay people to share our Dominican Charism as Associates of the Congregation was taken by the General Chapter 2010. An Associates Team was appointed by the Congregation Prioress and her Council in 2014.

The purpose of the Lay Associates Programme is primarily to share the Dominican Charism of the Congregation through encouraging Associates to

  • develop their personal spirituality;
  • strengthen their faith and prayer life; and
  • fulfil their baptismal mission in their family life, work place, neighbourhood and local Parish.

In all of this, Sisters accompany and support Associates, encouraging suitable women and men to join in the mission of the Congregation, to praise, to bless, to preach.

Lay Associates are individually affiliated to the Congregation by means of a process of formation and, by free choice, a formal commitment. Individuals may be invited to become Associates or approach the Congregation and ask to be admitted as such.

Associates do not take vows or make promises and they have none of the legal rights of members. Similarly, they share none of the canonical privileges of members.

Associates may choose to make a formal commitment to continue formation in the Dominican charism. This commitment may be renewed annually. Whether or not an individual Associate makes such a commitment is a personal choice and has no impact on his/her affiliation to the Congregation.
