Receiving the HabitSister Andiswa Ngcobo
Saturday, 13 March – Today in the presence of the Community of Marian House, Boksburg, Sister Stephany Thiel, Region Prioress, welcomed into the Congregation as a Novice, Sister Maby Andiswa Ngcobo.
In the current circumstances of the global pandemic, when family members could not be present to witness this simple ceremony, Sister Charity Dlamini represented Andiswa’s family, giving her permission to be received into the Congregation as a Novice.
Andiswa was clothed in the Dominican Habit: the tunic, the scapular (which hangs over one’s shoulders and is a sign of contemplation in our tradition) and a white veil, together with a Rosary.
At this moving ceremony, a young woman is asked What do you seek? She replies, God’s mercy and yours. This question will be put to her again in years to come: at First Profession and again at Final Profession. Always we seek and offer mercy freely.
Andiswa became ‘Sister Mary Andiswa’ and received also the Breviary (prayer book) from which she will recite and sing the Divine Office with the Community.
At the end of the ceremony, the Novitiate Register was signed and Sister Andiswa. In the absence of her Novice Mistress, Sister Ann Cunningham OP who could not travel because of the pandemic, .
