The 'BUT' Word

Sister Ursula Horan OP

How generous it is to fully praise someone. How many of us half praise people. It’s as if our generosity cannot stretch that little bit further just enough to be big hearted. The word ‘BUT’ can spoil what could be a full hearted praise.

‘You did that well, BUT…’

‘I thought your essay was excellent BUT…’

‘You cook well BUT…’

‘You crochet well BUT………..’

‘I like your painting BUT…’

‘The garden is lovely BUT…’

Prayer: Dear Lord help me to give full praise to others and to refrain from using the ‘BUT’ word which detracts from recognition, appreciation and praise.
